We live in a society. that is very preoccupied with the bottom line and how others can serve us.

When I sat down to write this article, I was planning your run of the mill, albeit quite thorough, overview of what webcam modeling is and the steps one might take to become a webcam model. You know, the kind of content that exists all over the internet. The kind that aims to help you decide that webcam modeling is the greatest gig ever and oh my god you should totally do it too (and by the way here’s my affiliate link to the website that pays me the most to refer new models)!

So scrap that idea. Let me explain the basics of webcam modeling for anyone just getting started in the online adult industry.

What The Hell is Webcam Modeling?

Webcam modeling is using your webcam to connect with viewers. They can see you, and that makes you a model. So that’s kind of awkward but don’t think too much on it. Those viewers may want any number of things- something to fap to, actual human connection, and everything in between. Normally you’d be in a chat room entertaining some people and maybe getting some tokens for doing sexy stuff… and other stuff. Some so it for fun, and some do it for cash. Most do it for both, and I’m sure there are other reasons than boredom or poverty to

The reality is that webcam modeling is whatever the hell you make it. I know, totally not helpful. But hear me out (because it’s actually the most important realization I ever had in this industry).

First we’ll start with the basics.

You gotta have a place to broadcast.

Personally, I use my whole apartment. When I first started back in 2013 I was tied to a mattress and not in a hot way. I had a much smaller apartment and a useless (now ex) husband occupying the other room. Moral is, you can work with what you have.

I caution against working with most studios since they’ll take a significant cut of your earnings. But if you really don’t have any privacy or for other reasons can’t broadcast from your home, you may have options depending on where you live.

Basic setup and Essentials for Cam Models.

Before we go all la-dee-da traipsing around the backyard and losing track of our WiFi signal, let’s start with the essentials.

Connection: The fastest internet you can afford.

Power: A computer with a half decent processor.

I recommend at least 2.5 GHz but I started with ~1.6 and still did okay. Pretty much anything current is gonna fit the bill, and some sites will even allow you to broadcast from your phone.

Clarity: An external webcam. Don’t give me that built-in crap- you deserve to be seen and heard.

Magnificence: Favour windows as much as possible for natural lighting. If that’s not practical for your situation or schedule, we’ll talk more about lighting in the future but you should look into a basic lighting kit.

You gotta take care of business.

Webcam models are independent contractors, which means – brace yourself. We gotta pay our own taxes. On the bright side, we get to claim business expenses – which includes all the essentials listed above, and that Magic Wand too. We’ll talk more about this later.

We’ll also need to address time management and scheduling, planning, branding, budgeting, when to hire outside help, how to grow your business, all that good stuff. Coming later. Bookmark me!

Think you got skills?

There’s more to webcam modeling than looking pretty and seducing others out of their hard-earned cash.

We’ll talk branding, graphic design, photography, content creation, video editing, seo and affiliate marketing in a future edition of webcam modeling is whatever the hell you make it.

Now let’s get to the juicy good part.

Define the parameters and run the party.

Don’t go in without a vision, even if it’s not where you start.

You can be the adorkable girl next door who eventually discovers a love for cosplay, or femdom, or cooking, or all of the above goddammit. The point is you don’t need to be fully prepared with costumes, whips and your dream kitchen. Start where you are.

Be you.

Know your values. Keep it real. And remember those are real people on the other side, too.

How to Respect Yourself and Live Your Values
An Urgent Message For Webcam Models

Your comfort and self-respect are never worth sacrificing to make a buck. Or 500.

You’re in complete control. You’re the boss. Never let anyone convince you otherwise and if someone is making you uncomfortable, you should feel absolutely free to confront them and/or kick them (out of your room) if they don’t comply in a way that makes you feel better about the situation.

Because once you compromise a little, you’ll compromise a little more. Eventually camming will just be another thing devoid of passion that you do to make ends meet. Learn from my mistakes- I’ve made plenty.

Next time: How much do camgirls make? Should I become a webcam model? What are the best sites to work on? And where do I go from here?

Thanks for being here. I appreciate you.

I must admit, this article (and the website) surprised me. I didn’t know what to expect based on the name of the link I clicked to get here. I’m happy to see that you’ve taken it upon yourself to look after your “sisters-in-arms” with genuinely helpful advice on how to be safe, happy and well-compensated. Keep up the good work!
