We interviewed Shuhboy, 39 year old cook based in South Carolina. He has been working in the online adult industry for the past 6 years and has graciously agreed to answer some questions about his experience.
Question: “Let’s talk about the early days and learning how to run your business. What were some of your biggest challenges?”
“Some of my biggest challenges were:
- Lack of experience and just having no clue how to maximize earnings.
- Shyness in front of the cam. I am fully confident being naked in front of someone I know but in front of strangers it took me a week or two to really open up.
- Being a straight male and knowing mostly gay men are watching and conversing and telling you things they would do to you. I’ve never questioned my sexuality so I told myself it can’t bother you. I had to learn to play along a little.”
Question: “Can you identify any ideas you once held about the adult industry, and how your own work has changed or affected these?”
“I don’t feel like I’ve changed my views of what [the adult industry] is.
I knew at the age of 18 I wanted to be involved. I’ve made videos and all of the other things young people do. But I didnt join the webcam community until my 30s. First watching, and after a while I was performing.
I guess the only idea I held that may not have been that accurate is you really have to work hard and get creative to maximize your earnings.”
Question: “How has your work in the adult industry changed you as a person or affected your personality?”
“I have always been a flirty guy.
And an experimental guy when it came to women. But ever since I started camming I feel like I’ve been more comfortable talking about it openly with others in my daily life. Not everyone of course but I tend to be able to identify the ones who may open to that kind of communication a little easier”
Question: “How has your work changed or affected your personal relationships with family and friends?”
“It hasn’t affected my relationships with family because nobody knows about my camming except a few close friends.
As far as the way that has affected me I’d say it’s been all good. 2 women decided they wanted to try it with me. And they both enjoyed it. But not as a regular thing. And then the others who know about it think it’s fun and cool. But wouldn’t try because of privacy. Which is understandable”
Question: “What do you love and hate about your choice of occupation?”
“What I love is the people I work with.
We all have a great time. I guess the thing I hate the most is the heat of the kitchen in the summertime working near hot equipment and a bunch of guys. It gets miserable sometimes”
Question: “Our society has a lot opinions about sex work. Tell us something about you or your work that would surprise someone who doesn’t know better.”
“I’m actually just a fun, likable guy
…who would help anyone who needed it. I just have a wild side I like to explore and I feel like camming is the safest way”
Question: “What do you think is the most important piece of wisdom you could possibly impart on someone just getting started in the industry?”
“Just be yourself but stay open to new things. Have to keep it fresh.”
